Cohen Statement on President Obama Seeking to Remove Cuba from Terror Sponsor List
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) issued the following statement regarding the announcement that President Obama will seek to remove Cuba’s designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism:
“I support the President’s efforts to chart a new course in our relationship with Cuba, and his decision to remove their State Sponsor of Terrorism designation is a positive step for both of our nations.
“Two decades ago our government determined the Cuban military poses no threat to us, while the State Department has found no evidence the Cubans provide support or training to terrorists—there are even signs that Cuba is, in fact, taking steps to fight terrorism.
“Removing Cuba from the Terrorism List will allow us to redirect our limited resources towards counter-terrorism efforts that actually help keep Americans safe, help enable to United States to more effectively promote democratic reforms in Cuba, and tear down another wall between our two nations that keeps Memphis businesses like FedEx out of an important market.”
