Cohen Statement on President Obama's State of the Union
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s State of the Union speech:
“President Obama laid out a carefully balanced blueprint for what we as a country need to do to create more jobs and improve the economy for millions of Americans. The President and Democrats in Congress are fighting every day to build an economy that works for everyone -- not just a wealthy few.
The President’s blueprint lays out how we’ll bring about a new era of American manufacturing; a new era for American energy; ideas to ensure our students and workers get the education and training they need to compete in a 21st Century world; and a call for a return to American Values – of fairness for all, and responsibility from all.
Unemployment and the home foreclosure rate are still too high in Memphis and across the country. We know what needs to be done to get America back on the right track for economic growth. We need to extend the payroll tax cut for 160 million Americans; extend unemployment benefits for the millions of Americans who lost their jobs through no fault of their own; and ensure tens of millions of seniors can continue to see the doctor of their choice under Medicare.
If the GOP is willing to end their obstructionist ways and put the country and our economy first and endorse the President’s blueprint, jobs will be created and our economy will grow stronger in 2012.”
