Cohen Statement on Presidential Visit

May 16, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today issued the following statement on President Obama’s visit to Memphis, Tennessee. The President was in Memphis to deliver the commencement speech at Booker T. Washington High School and to meet with families affected by the recent flooding, and with first responders and state and local officials:

“This was a great day for the students and faculty of Booker T. Washington High School, and for Memphis. The President’s commencement speech was truly inspirational, as was the graduation ceremony. Our children learned today that if you work hard you will be rewarded. Like the President said: ‘…if success can happen here at Booker T. Washington, it can happen anywhere in Memphis. It can happen throughout Tennessee. And it can happen all across America.’ I am so happy President Obama chose to further motivate the students of Booker T. Washington High School by selecting them as the winner of the Commencement Challenge and speaking about how important their success is to the welfare of our nation. I am also glad the President met with flood victims and first responders. The President’s recent emergency declarations have helped tremendously as we work to recover from the devastating weather.”
