Cohen Supports Memphian's Cultural and Economic Exchange Initiative With South Africa

April 3, 2014

[WASHINGTON, DC] – With the support of Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Memphis-native Anthony “Amp” Elmore met this week with South African Ambassador to the United States Ebrahim Rasool to discuss Elmore’s proposal to foster a cultural and economic exchange between the African nation and the city of Memphis. The meeting took place at the South African Embassy in Washington, DC.

“Amp’s proposal is an exciting opportunity for both Memphis and for South Africa that will help grow both economies as well as strengthen cultural ties between our countries, and I am happy to support his efforts to foster what could be an important partnership,” said Congressman Cohen.

Mr. Elmore has proposed opening a cultural exchange between Memphis and South Africa by linking our unique histories and our fights for equality, led in America by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and in South African by former South African President, His Excellency Nelson Mandela. The proposal also includes creating a trade relationship between our city and South Africa that would make Memphis the main American hub for imports from the country.
