Cohen: UTHSC to Receive $428K for Alcohol Research Programs
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center two federal grants totaling $428,549 for alcohol research programs. The new federal funds will be distributed by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).
“The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is known for its research on a wide variety of topics that effect our health in Memphis, Tennessee, and across the country,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will go a long way toward helping support programs that research alcoholism and how it can be prevented and treated.”
The first grant is worth $232,295 and the second grant is worth $196,254. NIAAA is part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health and supports and conducts biomedical and behavioral research on the causes, consequences, treatment, and prevention of alcoholism and alcohol-related problems. It funds approximately 90 percent of all such research in the United States and promotes reductions in the per capita consumption of alcohol. NIAAA also provides leadership in the national effort to reduce the severe and sometimes fatal consequences of these problems.
