Cohen Votes Against Earlier Nationwide Ban on Abortions in Judiciary Committee
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today released the following statement after voting against the District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in the House Judiciary Committee. The measure would ban abortions nationwide after 20 weeks.
“I voted against this measure because it fails to protect a woman’s Constitutional right to choose and also fails to protect a woman’s health and safety,” said Congressman Cohen, a longtime supporter of women’s rights. “The legislation also fails to make exceptions for abortion in cases of rape and incest. The District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act has no chance of passing the Senate. If my Republican colleagues are serious about protecting defenseless children, then they will work with Democrats to pass the DREAM Act and pass sensible gun safety laws like banning high capacity magazines to prevent Newtown shootings from ever taking place again.”
