Cohen Votes to Extend Unemployment Benefits

July 22, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today voted to extend unemployment insurance for more than 2 million Americans across the country.

“People who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own need their unemployment benefits,” said Congressman Cohen, who spoke on the House floor yesterday about extending the critical program. “It is vital that we extend unemployment insurance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table and pay their rent. This extension will bring some much needed peace of mind and financial relief to countless families across the country.”

The Unemployment Compensation Extension Act (H.R. 4213) would extend unemployment insurance to more than 2 million Americans until November 30. This would retroactively restore benefits to people who may have started losing their benefits as early as the end of May – some after just 26 weeks. The measure now heads to President Obama to be signed into law.
