Cohen, Wharton, Shelby County Trustee Lenoir to Highlight Importance of the Earned Income Tax Credit

January 30, 2014

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, and Shelby County Trustee David Lenoir will join United Way of the Mid-South President Bryce Haugsdahl to highlight the importance of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) tomorrow afternoon at the grand opening one of 15 new tax assistance sites located throughout Shelby County. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites will offer guidance and services free of charge to Shelby County citizens looking to ensure they get the tax refund they deserve.

“The Earned Income Tax Credit is too important for people to overlook, and everyone who is eligible should claim it,” said Congressman Cohen. “Memphians and all of the citizens of Shelby County shouldn’t pay more than they owe and should receive every penny they deserve in refunds. I hope the citizens of the Ninth District take advantage of the advice available at these tax assistance sites.”

Historically, eligible Memphis and Shelby County taxpayers have not taken full advantage of the EITC program. Last year, as much as $70 million in potential tax refunds was left on the table by area taxpayers. The 15 new VITA sites are operated by United Way of the Mid-South volunteers, and many will remain open through mid-April. More information about the VITA sites including locations, dates and hours of operation is available here.
