Collierville Native Thomas Carpenter Interns in Congressman Cohen’s Capitol Hill Office
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Collierville native Thomas Carpenter recently joined the staff of Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) as an intern in the Congressman’s Capitol Hill office. During his May through August internship, Mr. Carpenter will work closely with Congressman Cohen’s legislative team and assist in other official duties such as helping with constituent requests, attending hearings and briefings, conducting legislative research, and providing tours of the Capitol complex to Memphians visiting Washington. Each year, approximately a dozen interns serve the citizens of the Ninth District in the Congressman’s Washington, DC, office.
“I’ve known for some time that I wanted to work in policy and constituent service, so I was excited that Congressman Cohen offered me an internship in his Capitol Hill office,”Mr. Carpenter said.“I can’t think of a better way to spend my summer than working in a congressional office. I appreciate Congressman Cohen giving me this opportunity and am looking forward to giving back to the Memphis community during my time in Washington.”
During his time in Washington, Mr. Carpenter will experience the legislative process as well as the inner workings of our federal government firsthand, and he will gain valuable research and other skills that will make him more competitive in the job market.
“Thomas has shown he is eager to help the people of the Ninth District and learn about the work we do in Washington,” Congressman Cohen said. “It is important to provide opportunities like these to young adults who are passionate about efficient, effective governance and smart public policy.”
Thomas Carpenter has lived in the Memphis area for over ten years and is a rising senior at the University of Tennessee, where he is majoring in Classics and minoring in Political Science. He also works at UT’s Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy while he is in school.
