Congressman Cohen Accepts Legislative Leader Award from Humane Society

March 3, 2010

A life long supporter of animal rights and welfare issues, Congressman Cohen has long been a proponent of humane animal treatment in both the Tennessee State Senate and the United States Congress.

“The Humane Society’s continued efforts to protect the future of animal rights and welfare are important to me and many people in the 9th District,” Congressman Cohen said. “The treatment of animals has long been characterized as a direct reflection on how we as people treat ourselves and each other. This is why I am proud to stand with the Humane Society and more than 13,000 of my constituents in the fight to promote the continued protection of animals.”

Chief Executive Officer of The Humane Society of the United States, Wayne Pacelle said, “We commend Representative Cohen for taking the lead in seeking to strengthen federal animal welfare policies. We’re lucky to have his powerful voice on behalf of the animals and the many citizens who care about their protection.”

Every year, the Human Society Legislative Fund compiles a federal Humane Scorecard to provide a snapshot of animal protection issues considered by Representatives of the U.S. Congress. The rating is based on co-sponsorship of important pro-animal bills, key votes, and continued protection of major animal welfare laws.

For the third year in a row, Congressman Cohen received a 100% rating from the Humane Society Legislative Fund – the only perfect score among members of Congress from Tennessee.

“I thank the Humane Society of the United States and its affiliate, the Humane Society Legislative Fund for recognizing my efforts to promote continued advancement of animal protection legislation,” Congressman Cohen said.
