Congressman Cohen: Affordable Care Act Helps Tennesseans

January 8, 2016

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) today spoke on the House floor pointing out the strength of the Affordable Care Act in Tennessee and the dangers of repealing the law. A full video of Congressman Cohen’s remarks can be found here.

“In Tennessee, more than 236,000 enrolled in a healthcare plan under the Affordable Care Act during the latest open enrollment period. That’s more than 236,000 people who, if this bill becomes law, will not have healthcare or could have more expensive healthcare,” said Congressman Cohen. “And if you defund Planned Parenthood, you stop poor people, some of whom are in Tennessee’s 9th district, from receiving preventative healthcare such as mammograms, HIV testing, and planned birth control programs. This is a bad bill taking healthcare away from people who need it, otherwise can’t afford it, and otherwise who wouldn’t get it.”

Yesterday, the Department of Health and Human Services released the latest figures for enrollment of health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act. In Tennessee, 236,021 consumers selected plans during the first nine weeks of the current open enrollment period that runs through January 31, 2016. Tennessee ranks number 11 of the 38 states signing people up for health coverage using the federal HealthCare.gov.

The HealthCare.gov insurance marketplace is still open to enroll in health insurance plans until January 31, 2016. Individuals and families can visit https://bit.ly/hcSavings to see if they qualify for tax credits that will be applied as discounts on their monthly insurance premium. If they already have insurance coverage through the HealthCare.gov marketplace, their plan will be automatically renewed for 2016 but they should still visit HealthCare.gov to update their information, ensure they receive the full tax credit to which they are entitled, and review new options as cheaper insurance plans that better fit their needs may now be available.
