Congressman Cohen Announces $12.9 Million Grant for Shelby County Government Head Start Projects
“A key component to President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, Head Start is one of the longest-running programs in our nation’s history that effectively assists lower-income and impoverished children,” said Congressman Cohen. “Increased funding for Head Start and other early childhood education and assistance programs was one of the top priorities of the New Congress and I believe we are making great strides.”
“For children without the most basic resources, Head Start provides a safe place to learn and interact during their most formative years,” added Congressman Cohen. “There are 12.8 million children living in poverty in this country and 9.4 million living without health insurance. Sadly, 97 percent of infants and toddlers who are eligible for Early Head Start do not enroll. I am fighting to change these statistics, and I encourage everyone in the 9th District to take advantage of these Federal resources.”
Congressman Cohen is a cosponsor of legislation passed by Congress in 2007 to provide greater access and quality improvements to Head Start so more young children start school ready to succeed.
