Congressman Cohen Announces $1.4 Million Grant for MATA

April 10, 2008

“I am very pleased that the Federal Transit Administration has awarded these funds to MATA,” said Congressman Cohen. “I have made the procurement of funds for our transportation infrastructure in the 9th District one of my top priorities in Congress, and I applaud the FTA for its prudent judgment in awarding this grant.”

MATA will use this grant to supplement funds under other grant programs for the construction of the South Intermodal Terminal. This new facility will serve as a transfer center for MATA’s buses. The terminal will also be the local operations center for the local Greyhound Bus Line.

“As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I’m acutely aware of the importance of maintaining our public transportation systems in the 9th District, and I believe that these funds will provide the assistance that MATA needs to continue to provide good service to the people of Memphis,” continued Congressman Cohen. “More than 40,000 people ride the bus in Memphis every day, and as gas prices continue to soar to unprecedented levels, that number will likely rise. These moneys will help ensure that MATA has the resources it needs to serve our citizens properly.”
