CONGRESSMAN COHEN ANNOUNCES $17.9 MILLION FOR MEMPHIS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IMPROVEMENTS

May 29, 2009
The funds will be used to construct a new taxiway, improve the terminal building, install airfield guidance signs and perimeter fencing, and make runway improvements.

“Memphis International Airport is vital to the economic health of our community and this infusion of federal funds will make sure that it remains that way for years to come,” Congressman Cohen, a member of the House Aviation Subcommittee, said. “By investing in better runways and improved facilities we will create good paying construction jobs, and continue to attract tourists and businesses opportunities from around the country.”

Specifically, the federal funds will be used to:

• Fully reimburse the airport for funds expended on Taxiway P.
• Partially reimburse the airport for funds expended on Taxiway V.
• Install moving walkways from the new parking garage to the terminal.
• Improve airfield guidance signs to ease traffic flow to the terminal.
• Relocate the east entrance gate to improve access for future airport development.
• Rehabilitate the existing runway pavement.
• Widen the taxiway to accommodate larger aircraft on the airfield.

The airport’s grant was awarded through the Air Improvement Program (AIP), which provides significant funding to airports, helping them modernize the air traffic control system and expand airport runways and other facilities.

As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure’s Subcommittee on Aviation, Congressman Cohen is a supporter of increased AIP funding.
