Congressman Cohen Announces $250,000 HUD Grant for Memphis Housing Authority

September 18, 2008

“I am very pleased to announce this grant for the Memphis Housing Authority,” said Congressman Cohen. “This award will provide the funds MHA needs to maintain access to new technology for residents of public housing through technology, or ‘Neighborhood Networks’ centers. Neighborhood Networks centers provide access to computers, computer training and the Internet. These centers provide a wide range of services to help residents achieve long-term economic self-sufficiency.”

The Public Housing Neighborhood Networks program funds new and existing community technology centers. Existing centers may be upgraded to add equipment, make necessary physical improvements and expand services. New centers are established when there is no infrastructure, space or equipment currently in use for a computer technology center. Only public housing authorities were eligible to apply for this program, and Memphis and Chattanooga were the only recipients from Tennessee for this particular award during FY07.

Public Housing Authorities may also use grant funds for such things as:

  • Hiring of a project coordinator to manage and oversee center activities
  • Purchase of computer equipment
  • Internet connection
  • Physical improvements
  • Computer training
  • College preparatory classes
  • Job training
  • Literacy training
