Congressman Cohen Announces $255,833 Grant for University of Tennessee Health Science Center

June 1, 2008

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a division of HHS, granted the new award to Dr. Fu-Ming Zhou, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the UT-HSC College of Medicine. Dr. Zhou’s research focuses on brain mechanisms with particular attention on neuropsychiatric disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, depression, schizophrenia, drug abuse, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

“I am very grateful that HHS is funding the important work of scientists like Dr. Zhou at UT,” said Congressman Cohen. “We are only now beginning to understand some of the chemical and molecular foundations of how the brain functions. Scientists in the 9th District at the UT Health Science Center and St. Jude are paving the way for the development of treatments to neurological disorders like depression, Parkinson’s and drug abuse which affect so many American families. When the government invests in scientific research, we always reap the benefits down the road.”
