Congressman Cohen Announces $3.3 Million HUD Grant for City of Memphis
“This grant is further evidence that the recovery bill we passed two weeks ago is already having a major impact on our community,” said Congressman Cohen. “Homelessness prevention is not only a moral imperative, it’s smart fiscal policy. These funds enable the rapid re-housing of homeless families and help others on the verge of becoming homeless stay off the street. This, in turn, helps them reenter the labor market quickly and prevents the further destabilization of neighborhoods. Before H.R. 1 passed, the Urban Child Institute in Memphis predicted that this recession could increase the homeless population by more than 4,000, and I’m hopeful that these monies will stave off these effects.”
The Homelessness Prevention Grant will provide financial and other assistance to prevent individuals and families from becoming homeless and help those who are experiencing homelessness to be quickly re-housed. The funds under this program are intended to target individuals and families who would otherwise be homeless without assistance. The funds will provide for a variety of assistance, including: short-term or medium-term rental assistance and housing relocation and stabilization services, including such activities as mediation, security or utility deposits, utility payments, moving cost assistance, and case management.
