Congressman Cohen Announces $354,200 Grant for St. Jude
Dr. Taylor’s research revolves around neurodegenerative disease, a condition in which cells of the brain and spinal cord are lost. He has stated, “The principal goal of our research is to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with neurodegenerative disease.”
Congressman Cohen said, “I am grateful to HHS for their continued support of the important research being undertaken by esteemed scientists in the 9th District like Dr. Taylor. This new award will help fund important new research on neurodegenerative disease and aging at St. Jude. I am pleased that the scientists and researchers in the 9th District continue to take on these challenging problems and I wish them the very best of luck in their endeavors.”
A neurodegenerative disease is a disorder caused by the deterioration of certain nerve cells called neurons. Changes in these cells cause them to function abnormally, eventually causing them to die. There are a range of conditions that are classified as neurodegenerative diseases, from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s to alcoholism and narcolepsy. These diseases have their own characteristics and usually affect middle aged or older individuals and typically worsen over time.
