Congressman Cohen Announces $449,000 NIH Grant for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

June 5, 2007

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) is pleased to announce a recent $449,000 National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) grant awarded to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by the National Institute of Health (NIH). The highly competitive grant will fund the purchase of a mass spectrometer to be used for biomedical research. Under the guidance of St. Jude faculty member Dr. Clive Slaughter, the Ultraflex II Mass Spectrometer will expand the research capabilities of St. Jude’s Hartwell Center for Bioinformatics and Biotechnology.

Congressman Cohen, a long-time advocate for St. Jude and the world-class research and innovation taking place in its Memphis headquarters, toured the St. Jude campus earlier this spring and touted its outstanding achievements in the advancement of medical research and innovation.

Upon notification of the recent NIH grant, Congressman Cohen noted that, “St. Jude has long been a global leader in medical innovation and research across a spectrum of fields. I commend Dr. Slaughter and the entire research staff at St. Jude for their continuing efforts to fight diseases while working toward their cures. I am proud that St. Jude is in Memphis and I remain firmly committed to the principles and ideals of this fine hospital and to the dedicated professionals who fight catastrophic diseases in children.”
