Congressman Cohen Announces $5.8 Million Grant for Memphis International Airport
“In light of the recent announcement of the merger between Delta and Northwest Airlines, I am very pleased that the FAA has committed to continued investment in one of our most important resources in the 9th District: the Memphis International Airport,” said Congressman Cohen. “Thousands of people in our city are employed by Memphis International, and the merger plans have certainly caused some trepidation among Northwest and airport employees. I believe that the FAA’s decision to award these monies are indicative of the commitment of the Federal Government to the future stability and security of Memphis International.”
Memphis International will use this grant to assist in the rehabilitation of some of the runways and the associated taxiways at the airport. This maintenance is routine and will help to ease runway congestion, increase traffic flow and decrease flight delays out of Memphis International once completed.
“As a member of the Aviation Subcommittee of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I understand the necessity of maintaining our critical infrastructure, and these funds will help ensure that Memphis International remains one of the best, most efficient airports in the country,” Congressman Cohen added. “Our airport is one of the largest hubs in the country and one of the biggest reasons that Memphis has been able to attract businesses and investment over the past decades. I am grateful to the FAA for designating these funds for the 9th District, and with continued investment from the Federal Government, I’m confident that Memphis will remain the world’s distribution center for the foreseeable future.”
