Congressman Cohen Announces $5.9 Million in Federal Funding for Memphis International Airport

September 22, 2009
“This is great news for the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. Memphis International Airport is crucial to keeping people and commerce flowing throughout our nation. These federal funds will make sure that the Airport can continue its important role for many years to come,” Congressman Cohen said. “Investing in these kinds of improvements will better enable us to attract tourists and business opportunities, and help create much-needed jobs in our community.”

“We are delighted that the FAA has issued this new grant to fund essential capital projects that are vital to Memphis International Airport remaining the busiest air cargo airport in the world and increasing our economic impact on the region. These and future investments in our airport will ensure that Memphis will continue to be recognized as America’s Aerotropolis. The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority appreciates the support and assistance of Congressman Steve Cohen for making this FAA grant possible,” Larry Cox, President and Chief Executive Officer of Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority said.

Specifically, the funds will be used to:
• Construct Taxiway P;
• Rehabilitate Runway 09/27;
• Install Airfield Guidance Signs;
• Construct Taxiway V;
• Widen the existing Taxiway to accommodate Boeing 777 aircraft; and,
• Undertake phase 2 of runway rehabilitation projects.

The Airport’s grant was awarded through the Air Improvement Program (AIP), which provides significant funding to airports, helping them modernize the air traffic control system and expand airport runways and other facilities. Earlier this year, Congressman Cohen announced that the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority received $17.9 million in AIP funding to airport improvements. Today’s award brings the total AIP funding for the Airport to $23.6 million.

As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure’s Subcommittee on Aviation, Congressman Cohen is a supporter of increased AIP funding.
