Congressman Cohen Announces $977,687 in Health and Human Services Grants for Memphis

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) is pleased to announce a series of recent grants issued by the Department of Health & Human Services. The six grants, awarded for projects beginning in July of 2007, will bring $977,687 into Memphis for research and workforce development. Recipients include the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the University of Memphis, and the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is receiving four individual grants, issued by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH):

  • $326,606 from HRSA for Nurse Education Practice and Retention
  • $203,454 from NIMH for Mental Health Research Grants
  • $73,000 from NCI for Cancer Cause and Prevention Research
  • $16,448 from HRSA for Nurse Anesthetist Traineeships

University of Tennessee Health Science Center Interim Chancellor Hershel P. Wall stated, “At a time when NIH and other government grants are particularly difficult to achieve, we greatly appreciate this recognition of our faculty’s talent and the great work they do. Two of our most recent grants, one a particularly significant amount, were to the College of Nursing to support recruiting and retention efforts. These grants will go a long way in addressing the current nursing workforce issues.”

The University of Memphis is also receiving federal funds from HRSA, for its Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship program. On behalf of the University of Memphis, Kevin Roper, Executive Assistant to the President for Government Relations, stated, “We are very pleased HRSA is investing in workforce development in our community and appreciate Congressman Cohen’s support of the University.” The one-year grant to the University of Memphis totals $44,679.

Congressman Cohen is also pleased to announce a $313,500 National Cancer Institute grant to St. Jude for Cancer Biology Research, long a global leader in medical innovation and research. Congressman Cohen stated, “I’m proud of the breakthroughs taking place each day at St. Jude as their outstanding researchers continue unlocking the keys to the mysteries of life-threatening disease. Coupling this grant with St. Jude’s commitment to excellence, I am certain pioneering discoveries will continue to come from the world-class medical research being conducted at St. Jude.”
