July 11, 2014

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced 3 federal grants totaling $3,413,554 in funding for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This funding comes through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and will be used for a variety of programs and research projects.

“This funding will be used to continue important work at St. Jude, one of the world’s finest health care institutions,” said Congressman Cohen.

Today’s announcement includes funding for the following St. Jude projects:

  • $2,825,454.00 in funding from HHS’ National Cancer Institute (NCI) for the support of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium (PBTC).
  • $369,350.00 in funding from HHS’ National Cancer Institute (NCI) to study how specific mutations identified in childhood high-grade glioma cause disease and how these effects can be counteracted. This is especially important as more than 70 percent of children with high-grade glioma will die within two years of their diagnosis.
  • $218,750.00 in funding from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders for a project focused on drug discovery for hair cell regeneration in adult mammalian cochleae.
