Congressman Cohen Announces More Than Half a Million in Grants for UT-HSC

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases gave a new award in the amount of $167,319 to Dr. Mostafa Waleed Gaber, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging at the UT-HSC, for allergy, immunology and transplantation research. Dr. Gaber is researching new treatments for wound healing.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences granted a new award in the amount of $206,371 to Dr. Jack Buchanan, an Associate Professor also in the UT-HSC Department of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging for pharmacology, physiology and biological chemistry research.

Finally, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute gave a new award in the amount of $208,750 to Dr. Ryoichi Teruyama, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology. Dr. Ryoichi is conducting research on heart and vascular diseases.

Congressman Cohen stated, “I am very happy to announce these large grants from HHS for these three fine scientists at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. The UT-HSC is a first-rate research hospital and I know that these doctors are laying the groundwork for more scientific innovation and medical breakthroughs to come through the 9th District. I applaud HHS for continuing to recognize the quality work and scientific research being conducted at the UT-HSC in Memphis.”
