Congressman Cohen Announces Nearly $400,000 for WKNO
“I am happy to announce that WKNO has been awarded this grant from the Department of Commerce,” said Congressman Cohen. “These monies will help with WKNO’s Capital Campaign for constructing and equipping a new Digital Media Center. I am a proud member of WKNO, and an ardent supporter of PBS. The top-notch programming offered at WKNO has educated and informed the people of Memphis and the Mid-South for more than 50 years. Public broadcasting has a vital role to play media marketplace, and I believe the future is very bright for WKNO with their new Digital Media Center opening next summer.”
Russ Abernathy, Director of Television and Technology at the Mid-South Public Communications Foundation, stated: “We appreciate the Congressman’s support and his efforts on behalf of public television. These funds will be used to purchase state-of-the-art equipment so that our local production service will be in HD.”
PTFP supports the expansion and improvement of public telecommunications services by providing matching grants for public facilities that deliver educational and cultural programs across the nation. Established in 1962, PTFP has contributed to bringing public broadcasting services to almost 97% of the population. In addition, PTFP supports the replacement and improvement of the public broadcasting infrastructure including the upgrade to digital technologies. The program also provides funds to educational institutions and non-profit organizations for a variety of technology-oriented distance learning projects.
In its unique role as the independent, not-for-profit, community-owned broadcasting voice in the Mid-South, WKNO is dedicated to quality radio and television programming in order to illuminate, inform, entertain, and educate the people of the Mid-South community.
