Congressman Cohen Attends Award Ceremony for Memphis Editorial Cartoonist Bill Day

February 17, 2010
“I was honored to join Bill, his wife Susan and their three sons last night as he was recognized by his peers for his media contributions,” Congressman Cohen said. “Whether it is shining a light on crime, poverty or the scourge of infant mortality, Bill’s artwork lives up to what he has called the theme of his work, the defense of the oppressed.”

Bill Day received Special Citation for his work addressing the growing rate of infant mortality in the United States, an issue which is also near and dear to Congressman Cohen, who is sponsoring the NEWBORN Act – legislation that would create 15 national pilot programs in cities with the highest infant mortality rates in the nation. The bill was included as part of the health care reform bill that passed the House.

Other honorees last night included: the CBS News program 60 Minutes, Brianna Keilar of CNN, Julie Hirschfeld Davis of the Associated Press, Colbert I. King of the Washington Post, and The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

Bill Day’s award-winning cartoons are available to newspapers worldwide three times a week through United Feature Syndicate, and it is widely reprinted in major national magazines including Newsweek, Time, U.S. News and World Report and Business Week.

Bill Day has won the Green Eyeshade Award from the Society of Professional Journalists five times -- in 2009, 2006, 2005, 2001, and 2000. The recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Award, he has also been honored with the National Headliner Award, the John Fischetti Award, First Amendment Award, New York Newspaper Guild’s Page One Award, National Cartoonists Society’s Award for Best Editorial Cartoons, and James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism.

He resides in Memphis with his family.
