Congressman Cohen to Cut Ribbon at Pink Palace's New Inside Africa Exhibit

January 24, 2007

Memphis, TN -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) will cut the ribbon for the opening of the exhibit INSIDE AFRICA at the Pink Palace in Memphis tonight at 6:15 p.m. INSIDE AFRICA explores the many facets of Africa – its peoples, its lands, its rich cultural history and its stories – and provides a bridge to contemporary American life.

Congressman Cohen stated, “It is truly an honor to participate in launching this wonderful exhibit. The great African heritage of so many Americans is honored through this presentation.”

INSIDE AFRICA opens to the public on January 27, 2007 and will continue through May 6. Exhibit sections include “Family & Festivals;” “Safari;” and “Caravan.” The exhibit also provides a section on the Diaspora and slavery. An additional section entitled “Genius in America” was added by the Freedom Center to explore the idea of ‘freedom’ in its many forms.

The 6,300-square-foot exhibit offers a deeper understanding of the world's second largest continent and its peoples from historical and contemporary perspectives. Through many hands-on activities, multimedia presentations and an exceptional collection of African artifacts, the exhibit demonstrates the enormous diversity of African geography, societies and political systems.
