Congressman Cohen Earns an "A" from the NAACP
“As a Lifetime Member of the NAACP, I have always been supportive of their legislative agenda both in the U.S. House of Representatives and during my tenure in the Tennessee State Senate,” said Congressman Cohen. “I am grateful for this recognition and I will continue to work with NAACP leaders like Julian Bond and Maxine Smith to effect change that benefits the people of the 9th District.”
Since 1914, the NAACP Report Card has served as a presentation of key civil rights votes taken in the United States Senate and House of Representatives. The report card is designed to provide NAACP members with insight into the general voting patterns of their Congressional representatives and state delegations over the course of each session of Congress.
Some of the issues considered by the NAACP in their report card during 110th Congress included increasing the minimum wage, making college more affordable, crimes prevention, the Head Start reauthorization, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), reducing recidivism through ex-offender reentry programs, the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, the extension of unemployment benefits, the Credit Card Holders’ Bill of Rights, and the Paycheck Fairness Act – all of which Congressman Cohen voted for.
Congressman Cohen added, “Having cultivated personal relationships with key leaders in the NAACP over my 27 years of public service, I am very cognizant of their positions on key issues. They do an outstanding job of informing leaders at the state, local and national levels about legislation that is beneficial to the African-American community, and I thank them for their service.”
