Congressman Cohen Fights for American Families

December 10, 2007

“With home values dropping, a mortgage crisis looming, and the costs of health care, home heating oil, and a college education continuing to rise, Americans – especially middle and lower-income families – are beginning to feel the effects of a declining economy,” explained Congressman Cohen.

A new CBS/New York Times poll indicates that only 26% of Americans approve of the way President Bush is handling the economy while 64% disapprove. 57% of the American people say the state of the national economy is bad and 53% believe the economy is getting worse. Additionally, the poll found that 49% of the American people trust Democrats to ensure a strong economy while only 31% trust Republicans.

“This poll does not bode well for our economic future, but I want to assure everyone in Memphis that the Congress is doing everything in its power to put the economy back on track,” said Congressman Cohen. “We have made significant progress this year in protecting Americans from the impending economic crunch, but our work is far from complete.”

“This year, we have passed billions of dollars in tax relief for American small businesses, passed legislation to address the subprime mortgage crisis, increased the minimum wage for the first time in a decade, passed legislation that cuts taxes for middle class families, passed a landmark energy bill that will save on energy costs in the coming years, and given families the most college cost assistance since the GI bill in 1944.”

“Our number one priority in Washington is to ensure that every American has the chance to succeed, and I believe that we are taking important steps to realize that goal.”
