Congressman Cohen Named to Influential House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee
Washington, DC -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced today that the House Democratic Steering Committee approved second committee assignments for freshmen Members. Freshman Congressman Steve Cohen (D-Memphis) was appointed to the Transportation Committee. Congressman Cohen stated, “This appointment is vital for District 9 which is one of the nation’s top transportation and distribution hubs, a great aerotropolis which serves the nation and world. Historically, the growth of our city is intertwined with transportation, from its birth as a river city to its present day status as the home of the world’s busiest air cargo carrier and home to one of the world’s largest airlines. I look forward to working with the District 9 transportation sector as well as business leaders on transportation issues and on behalf of our district’s citizens. I appreciate Speaker Pelosi’s confidence in appointing me to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee as well as my previous appointment to the Judiciary Committee.”
Regarding the new committee assignments, Speaker Pelosi stated, “Our new Members will bring a spirit of renewal and hope for the American people that will energize and invigorate the Democratic Caucus as we take American in a New Direction. Their diversity and vast array of personal experience on which to draw on will ensure that all Americans, not just the privileged few, are given a voice in the halls of Congress.”
Rep. James Oberstar (MN-8) will chair the Transportation and Infrastructure committee, and Rep. John Mica (FL-7) will serve as the ranking Republican member on the committee.
