Congressman Cohen Obtains $303,484 Grant for Southwest Community College

September 23, 2008

“I am very grateful to Chairman Obey granting this request for Southwest Tennessee Community College,” said Congressman Cohen. “Southwest’s nursing and biotechnology program is essential for training the next generation of workers in the 9th District’s burgeoning biotechnology sector. Southwest is the largest public community college in the state of Tennessee and this funding will help to improve one of their most important areas of study.”

The Nursing and Biotechnology Program carries out instruction in core natural sciences courses needed to enter nursing, biotechnology, and allied health associate degree and certificate programs. It also provides instruction in nursing courses for an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree program and instruction in biotechnology courses for an Associate of Applied Science in Biotechnology Technician degree program. In addition to providing instruction, the program provides career awareness events for area high school students and their teachers and facilitates collaborative meetings with area employers in nursing and biotechnology.

Congressman Cohen added, “With area hospitals like St. Jude, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Le Bonheur continuing to attract jobs and money to the 9th District, it’s more important than ever to support institutions like Southwest which offer specialized training at affordable prices to local students. The nurses and technicians are the backbone of the health care industry, and Southwest needs these resources to continue to offer training for these professions. I am proud that the 9th District received these funds and I will continue to work to secure funding for such worthwhile programs.”
