Congressman Cohen to Read to Downtown Elementary School Students as Part of the NEA's Read Across...
Memphis, TN -- As a part of the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America campaign, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) will read to the children at Memphis’ Downtown Elementary School, 10 North Fourth, at 9 a.m. Monday, March 19.
Now in its 10th year, the NEA’s Read Across America calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading during the birthday month of famed children’s author Dr. Seuss. In addition to reading, the awareness program emphasizes the importance of motivating children and helping them master basic skills.
Congressman Cohen stated, “Reading is the basic building block of all education, no matter what curriculum a student pursues. I’m pleased to participate in this important event the NEA is utilizing to promote reading awareness. For the 110th Congress, education for all children is and will continue to be a top priority. This nation’s future rests in the hands of our children and we must ensure they can read and write.”
The Downtown Elementary School, established in 2003, is a state-of-the-art facility with a strong academic program for both optional and non-optional students.
