Congressman Cohen releases the names of Shelby County taxpayers with unpaid income tax returns.
“As gas prices continue to soar and the mortgage crisis looming, I wanted to make sure that no one in my district was unfairly getting pinched by the Federal Government and the IRS,” said Congressman Cohen. “As it turns out, there are nearly 500 people in Shelby County who are owed money by the IRS. We could all use some extra money during the holiday shopping season, and so I encourage everyone to check my website and make sure that they’ve collected all the refunds they’re entitled to from the Federal Government.”
“Middle-income Americans already pay too much money in taxes to Washington, and I believe that we need to be focused on putting some of that back into their pockets,” Congressman Cohen continued. “Tax cuts for middle-income families will always be one of my highest priorities in Congress. That’s why my colleagues and I in the House voted to suspend the Alternative Minimum Tax this fall.”
Nationwide, there are 115,478 taxpayers who have unclaimed tax refund checks worth about $110 million. Usually, a tax refund is deemed undeliverable when the IRS or U.S. Postal Service does not have the taxpayer’s current address on file.
Taxpayers can receive their money as soon as they update their address with the IRS. Shelby County residents can receive their money by:
• Visiting Congressman Cohen’s website at cohen.house.gov to see if A) their name is on the list of taxpayers owed money, and B) to find out how to claim there money.
• Visiting IRS.gov to access the “Where’s My Refund?” tool. The tool can be accessed at the following web address: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96596,00.html. Taxpayers can check the status of their refunds and provide instructions on how to resolve delivery problems.
