Congressman Cohen Selected for Judge Porteous Impeachment Task Force

The Task Force will investigate accusations against Judge Porteous that he committed perjury by signing false financial disclosure and bankruptcy forms and violated other laws and judicial ethics by presiding over a trial in which lawyers from both sides gave him money.

“I do not take this appointment lightly,” said Congressman Cohen. “If laws were broken by a federal judge, it severely undermines the integrity our justice system. This is not a partisan issue, and my colleagues on the Task Force – Republican and Democrat – are absolutely committed to seeing that justice is done. “

The Task Force will conduct an independent investigation into the allegations against Judge Porteous, depose witnesses, and make a decision on whether to move forward with charges of impeachment. Based on the recommendations of the Task Force, the full House will vote on whether to impeach. If Judge Porteous is impeached, he would then be tried before the Senate, which would then vote on whether he should be removed from the bench.
