Congressman Cohen Statement on the Anniversary of Signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
“Forty-four years ago today, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law, one of the milestones in the continual struggle for equality for all. The Civil Rights Act brought about sweeping changes, including the prohibition of racial discrimination in public places as well as the prohibition against employers discriminating against employees based on race.
“We have come as far as we have today because of the fierce dedication and hard work of many Americans who believed that positive action could overcome hatred and oppression and whose voices never waivered in the call for an end to a centuries-old injustice. I’m privileged to serve in Congress with Congressman John Lewis, one of those brave individuals who led the charge for justice and fairness. Every American owes him and countless others a deep debt of gratitude for fighting against all odds to make our nation a better place and opening the doors of opportunity for future generations.
“But the fight is not over. Forty-four years later, Congressman Lewis continues the fight for true equality as should all of us who believe that a truly great America must be one that provides equal opportunity and justice for all her citizens. In honor of all those who worked to see the Civil Rights Act become law, we must rededicate ourselves today to finishing the noble work they began.”
