Congressman Cohen's Statement on the Storm Devastation in Shelby County

February 6, 2008

“My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in Tennessee who has been affected by these devastating storms and tornadoes, especially to those who have lost loved ones or have suffered injuries. I have been in touch with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director David Paulson today to discuss the appropriate federal assistance that may be required. I serve on the Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management Subcommittee of the Transportation Committee which oversees FEMA and I will see to it, should Governor Bredesen request that parts of Tennessee be declared ‘disaster areas.’”

“I am pleased that the President made his announcement today pledging to help those who have been affected. This is an instance when government can and must help, and I will work with Representative Blackburn and Senators Alexander and Corker to ensure that the people of Shelby County get the assistance that they need. I am proud of the hard work of our local emergency workers and their rapid response to this disaster. This is a sad day, but together, we will get through it.”
