Congressman Steve Cohen to Announce Upcoming “I Am A Man" Award Recepients for April 4th Foundation

The “I AM A MAN” Awards are presented each year to recognize outstanding individuals who promote excellence in the field of economic justice and equality. Past award recipients include President Bill Clinton and Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-35).

Mr. Belafonte was a key supporter of Dr. King’s civil rights movement and has been actively involved with other civil rights organizations for decades. Congressman Lewis, who House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calls “the conscience of the U.S. Congress,” has dedicated his life to protecting human rights, securing civil liberties and building a better America. Bishop William H. Graves, the Senior Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, is the first African American to serve on the Board of Directors at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). He was appointed in 2006 by President George W. Bush and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives.

Founded in 1999, the April the 4th Foundation’s mission is to provide an organized platform for the encouragement, creation and support of commemorative historical and educational programs on the anniversary of the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King., Jr. on April 4th, 1968 in Memphis.

Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery, co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership organization with Dr. Martin Luther King, will be the keynote speaker at the 2008 banquet which will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, April 4 in Ballrooms A and B of the Cook Convention Center.
