Congressman Steve Cohen Receives an "A" Grade from the NAACP for His First Year Voting Record
“As a Lifetime Member of the NAACP, I've always supported the goals of this venerable organization. My 26-year legislative career has been consistently harmonious with the positions of the NAACP. I'm pleased to have the opportunity to represent Tennessee's 9th District on the issues that are vital to our citizens,” said Congressman Cohen.
Since 1914, the NAACP Report Card has served as a presentation of key civil rights votes taken in the United States Senate and House of Representatives. The report card is designed to provide NAACP members with insight into the general voting patterns of their Congressional representatives and state delegations over the course of each session of Congress.
Some of the issues considered by the NAACP to be of particular importance during the 2007 Session of the House of Representatives included increasing the minimum wage, post-Katrina public housing assistance, making college more affordable, expanding small business loans, hate crimes prevention, the Head Start reauthorization, supporting Darfur through divestment in Sudan, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), reducing recidivism through ex-offender reentry programs, and supporting organized labor – all of which Congressman Cohen voted for.
“The NAACP has done an excellent job of cultivating a legislative plan of action that is beneficial to the people of the 9th District,” continued Congressman Cohen. “I will continue to work with the NAACP to ensure their ability to advance their cause in the U.S. Congress.”
The Report Card covers all of 2007 and shows how all 100 United States Senators and 435 voting members of the House of Representatives voted on the NAACP’s most important civil rights issues.
