Congressmen Cohen Announces $12.7 Million Grant for Memphis International Airport

June 13, 2008

“In light of the announcement of the merger between Delta and Northwest Airlines, as well as the news of Delta Airlines terminating its 10-year contract with Pinnacle Airlines, I am very pleased that the FAA has committed to continued investment in Memphis International,” said Congressman Cohen. “Thousands of people in the 9th District are employed at Memphis International, and I understand that recent developments in the airline industry, specifically related to Memphis, have caused some trepidation for people working at the Memphis International Airport. I believe that the FAA’s decision to award these monies are indicative of the commitment of the Federal Government to the future stability and security of our airport.”

The grant provides funding for:
• designing for a new cargo ramp and the reconstruction for the terminal cargo ramp which is deteriorating due to age,
• demolishing two cargo building to accommodate the expansion of Concourse C,
• the acquisition of snow removal equipment,
• a new terminal building,
• deicing equipment,
• erosion control,
• and the rehabilitation of existing cargo ramps, runways and taxiways.

“As a member of the Aviation Subcommittee of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I understand the necessity of maintaining our critical airport infrastructure, and these funds will help ensure that Memphis International remains one of the best, most efficient airports in the country,” Congressman Cohen added. “Our airport is one of the biggest reasons that Memphis has been able to attract businesses and investment over the past decades, and I am grateful to the FAA for designating these funds for the 9th District. With continued investment from the Federal Government, I’m confident that Memphis will remain the world’s distribution center for years to come.”
