Congressmen Cooper and Cohen Push Passage of Appropriations Amendment for HBCUs

July 17, 2007

Washington, DC -- Today, the U.S. House approved an appropriations amendment to increase funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities by $100 million and for Historically Black Graduate Schools by $25 million. Congressman Jim Cooper (TN-5), sponsor of the amendment, stated on the House floor, "The need is great. Historically Black Colleges and Universities across America need help and they need help now."

Speaking on the floor of the House in support of the amendment, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) pointed out that Historically Black Colleges and Universities have not been adequately funded over the past several years, citing the continuing critical need of HBCUs. Stating that HBCUs are "still the first choice for many African American students" Congressman Cohen stressed that support for HBCUs will help "those who have not had the opportunity to share in the American dream."
