Friday, April 4th: The 40th Anniversary of the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.

April 3, 2008

In April of 1968, Dr. King, who fought tirelessly for worker’s rights and a living wage, came to Memphis in support of the sanitation workers’ strike. As assassin’s bullet struck him as he stood on a balcony at the Lorraine Motel in downtown Memphis, now a part of the National Civil Rights Museum.

In early 2007, the newsletter/journal Poverty & Race asked me to contribute an article about author Michael Honey’s book, Going Down Jericho Road: The Memphis Strike, Martin Luther King’s Last Campaign. Following you will find my review and an excerpt from Mr. Honey’s book.
