Legislation Naming Post Office for Reverend Kenneth T. Whalum Passes Senate

October 5, 2007

Washington, DC - This week, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bill to designate the U.S. Post Office at 555 South 3rd Street in Memphis as the "Kenneth T. Whalum, Sr. Post Office Building." The House passed the companion bill in early September. Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) sponsored the bill in the House and Senator Lamar Alexander sponsored the companion in the Senate.

Congressman Cohen stated, “Kenneth Whalum’s life is one that should be remembered and emulated. The citizens of Memphis have much to be grateful for regarding the contributions that he has made to our city as a publicly elected official, as a clergyman and as a professional in the United States Postal Service. As far as I know this is the first time a post office will be named for a former postal employee and I believe this a tribute to all postal employees and that Reverend Whalum would agree. I appreciate Senator Alexander’s work to bring this to fruition in the Senate.”

“Reverend Whalum has given the Memphis community a lifetime of good work,” said Senator Alexander. “Congressman Cohen’s legislation is a fitting tribute to Reverend Whalum’s service to his church, family, neighborhood, city and the U.S. Postal Service.”
