February 3, 2014

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Memphis native and Christian Brothers High School graduate Barrett Heffington recently began a 4-month long internship in Congressman Steve Cohen’s (TN-09) Washington, D.C. office. In addition to several other responsibilities, interns help the Congressman with constituent requests, assist with his legislative duties, attend hearings and briefings, perform important research, and give tours of the U.S. Capitol building to Shelby County residents visiting Washington. Each year, roughly a dozen interns serve the citizens of the Ninth District in the Congressman’s Capitol Hill office.

“I am glad that Barrett has this opportunity to see first-hand how Congress works,” said Congressman Cohen.“I am always impressed with the drive and passion for government shown by Memphis’ young people. Barrett will be an asset to this office and the citizens of the Ninth District.”

During Mr. Heffington’s time in Washington, he will acquire firsthand knowledge of the legislative process, develop valuable research skills to make him more competitive in the job market, and gain insight into the inner workings of the federal government.

“As a Memphis native, I have long respected Congressman Cohen and the work he does for the Memphis community,” said Heffington. “It is exciting to work with a Member of Congress who is so well respected among his colleagues in the House and to know that the Congressman who represents me and my neighbors is one of America’s most outstanding elected officials. I am honored to have this opportunity to serve the people of the Ninth District in Congressman Cohen’s office.”

Mr. Heffington is a junior at the University of Mississippi, where he is majoring in Political Science and minoring in Spanish.
