Memphis Native Interns in Congressman Cohen's Washington, DC Office
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Memphis native and Christian Brothers High School graduate David Carpenter is spending 5 months this fall and winter interning for Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), working behind the scenes in the Congressman’s Capitol Hill office. In addition to several other responsibilities, interns help the Congressman with constituent requests, assist with his legislative duties, attend hearings and briefings, perform important research, and give tours of the U.S. Capitol building to Shelby County residents visiting Washington. Each year, roughly a dozen interns serve the citizens of the Ninth District in the Congressman’s Washington, D.C., office.
“David has been an asset to my office and has done good work for the citizens of the Ninth District,” Congressman Cohen said. “I am glad that he has had this opportunity to get a close-up view of how Congress works, and am always impressed with the drive and passion for government shown by Memphis’ young people.”
During Mr. Carpenter’s time in Washington, he has acquired firsthand knowledge of the legislative process, developed valuable research skills that have made him more competitive in the job market, and gained insight into the inner-workings of the federal government.
“I’m very appreciative I had the opportunity to intern for Congressman Cohen,” said Carpenter. “Having grown up in Memphis, I can’t imagine a better Member of Congress to work for and with. Congressman Cohen is one of America’s best elected officials and I’m glad I was able to serve in his office.”
Mr. Carpenter is a graduate of the American University where he majored in Political Science and History. He is a veteran of several political campaigns, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s 2010 re-election campaign, and has served as a campaign manager in state-level races during the 2012 elections. As an intern in Congressman Cohen’s Washington office, Mr. Carpenter is especially interested in assisting with legislation.
