Mobile Disaster Recovery Center Opens in Shelby County

February 12, 2008

The MDRC will be open daily at the Hickory Hill Community Center, 3910 Ridgeway Rd., Memphis, TN 38115; from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. until further notice.

“I have been pleased with the federal response so far to this crisis in the 9th District,” said Congressman Cohen. “The Mobile Disaster Recovery Center is an excellent utility that I know will assist those who have been affected by last week’s storms. As a member of the Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management Subcommittee of the Transportation Committee which oversees FEMA, I have been in close contact with the agency and FEMA Director David Paulson to ensure a smooth recovery and assistance effort and I believe that we are succeeding on this front.”

Disaster survivors should apply for assistance at (800) 621-FEMA (3362), TTY (800) 462-7585 or online at www.fema.gov.

Services people can expect from an MDRC are:

  • Guidance regarding disaster recovery;
  • Clarification of any written correspondence received;
  • Housing Assistance and Rental Resource information;
  • Answers to questions, resolution to problems and referrals to agencies that may provide further assistance
  • Status of applications being processed by FEMA;
  • U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) program information; and
  • Information from representatives of other federal, state and local agencies

The biggest advantage of Mobile Disaster Recovery Centers (MDRCs) is the speed with which they can be placed into service. They are RVs equipped with computers and satellite uplink capabilities. Designed as traveling disaster recovery centers, MDRCs can be centrally located in disaster areas.

FEMA coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
