New Federal Funding Map Feature Added to Website
July 7, 2009
The new “Federal Funding Map” details most of the federal funding that has flowed into the district since January of this year. While not an absolute total, so far more than $370 million has been awarded in either direct federal funding or through grants. The lion’s share of more than $277 million has come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) that Congressman Cohen voted to support and was signed into law earlier this year by President Obama.
“Since January, Recovery Act funds have helped to rebuild our roads and bridges, support our struggling small businesses, and help save or create jobs. We still have a long way to go to turn the page on this economy, but the infusion of more than $277 million has put us on the path to do just that,” Congressman Cohen said. “Like President Obama, I believe in transparency and accountability, and this map allows everyone to see how taxpayer money is being spent in our district. I was proud to vote for the Recovery Act and will continue to do all that I can to make sure that this crucial funding is available to help rebuild our communities as soon as possible.”
Since January, Recovery Act funds have been awarded to a number of organizations, including the Shelby County YouthBuild Program that teaches jobs skills and renovates homes; the Memphis Area Transit Authority to purchase new buses; the City of Memphis to hire additional teenagers as part of the summer jobs program; and, direct aid to veterans and seniors in the form of $250 checks.

In addition to Recovery Act funding, the map also tracks federal grant awards to the district. To date, nearly $90 million in federal grants and direct aid have been awarded to the Ninth District’s schools and colleges, hospitals, and first-responders. Millions have also been awarded to help modernize Memphis International Airport so that it can continue its important role as a major transportation hub.
The map is available by clicking here or by clicking on the “Federal Funding Map” tab on the left hand side of the website.
The map will continually be updated as more funds are distributed to the Ninth District.
