Obama Appoints Ed Stanton U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee

April 14, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, President Barack Obama announced that he appointed Memphian Ed Stanton as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee. Ed Stanton, Senior Counsel for Federal Express Corporation, is a lifelong citizen of Memphis, Tennessee with a history of dedicated community service. He has a broad range of legal experience in government, private and corporate sectors, from which he has gained the requisite skills to serve as U.S. Attorney.

This morning, Congressman Cohen called Mr. Stanton to congratulate him on his appointment as U.S. Attorney. Congressman Cohen stated, “It was my pleasure to deliver the good news to Ed Stanton. I commend President Obama for the fine choice he has made by appointing Mr. Stanton to be U.S. Attorney. President Obama has been diligent in appointing individuals who have stellar records and superior attributes, which is confirmed by his appointment of Ed Stanton.

“I first met Ed Stanton when he was in private practice and I was a State Senator. He and I worked together on a transportation project for Memphis and later served together on the Center City Commission. When we both ran for the Democratic nomination for the 9th Congressional District in 2006, I came to have even greater admiration for Ed Stanton’s abilities and work ethic. There is great respect for him among the members of the Memphis and Tennessee Bar Associations. The Western District of Tennessee has an exceptional record of service from its U.S. Attorneys and I know that Ed Stanton will add further distinction to that list.”

Congressman Cohen added, “I’d also like to thank Interim U.S. Attorney Larry Laurenzi for his service. He has done an excellent job and we all owe a debt of gratitude to him for his dedication. I look forward to continuing working with him on issues of importance to the citizens of the 9th Congressional District.”
