Senior Veterans Affairs Official Addresses Memphis Veterans' Concerns on Cohen's Invitation

June 27, 2014

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) was joined by Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Operations and Management Jan Murphy at a town hall with over 150 Mid-south veterans this morning to discuss ongoing concerns about scheduling and the quality of care at the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). Following the town hall, Congressman Cohen and Under Secretary Murphy also toured Memphis VAMC.

“It has been a top priority for me to ensure that a senior VA official visit Memphis and speak to veterans here,” said Congressman Cohen. “I am pleased that Under Secretary Murphy visited to talk to veterans and to see first-hand how the Memphis VA is being run. This visit helps to reassure the nearly 200,000 veterans served by the VA Medical Center in Memphis that the Department takes seriously and is working to address them.”

Since reports calling into question the quality of care provided at the Memphis VAMC were uncovered, Congressman Cohen has repeatedly requested that high-ranking VA officials visit the facility to ensure that the agency fully understands the needs of the Memphis veteran community here on the ground.
