In TeleTown Hall Meeting, Cohen Talks to More Than 15,000 Ninth District Constituents

May 1, 2014

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) hosted a telephone town hall last night to answer his constituents’ questions about the issues facing the Ninth District and the nation. During yesterday’s telephone town hall meeting, the Congressman discussed a variety of issues including his efforts to raise the minimum wage, last week’s visit to Memphis by two members of President Obama’s Cabinet, the confirmation by the Senate of Sheri Lipman—Congressman Cohen’s recommendation to the President—as a new Federal Judge, and the recent changes in the President’s use of executive clemency to bring justice to the unfairly incarcerated.

“These town hall meetings offer Memphians and all citizens of the Ninth District yet another way to speak directly with me and share what’s important to them,” said Congressman Cohen. “I appreciated having this opportunity to listen to the Ninth District’s perspective on the issues facing our city and enjoyed discussing my work to promote Memphis to President Obama’s administration and help the middle class by raising the minimum wage as well as give the unemployed a helping hand by extending unemployment insurance. Regardless of the issue, the perspective, opinions and ideas of the citizens of the Ninth District help me move forward with legislation in Congress.”

The Telephone Town Hall meeting began at 6:30PM CT and lasted approximately one hour. More than 15,400 Ninth District constituents participated in the call and many asked questions about the Affordable Care Act and services available to veterans, among other issues. Since being elected to the House of Representatives in 2006, Congressman Cohen has hosted dozens of town hall meetings in his Congressional district and via telephone from Washington, D.C.
