Demanding the Full Release of the Mueller Report

April 22, 2019
Enewsletters

Dear Friend,

This week, I began reviewing the heavily redacted copy of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report and demanded that the entire 448-page report be presented to Congress. I also wrote to the Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security requesting information regarding reports that he had been offered a presidential pardon if he is jailed for illegally closing the border to asylum seekers. In addition, I met with several constituents in my Memphis office. I also want you to be aware of a "Congress On Your Corner" event my staff is holding at the Millington Public Library next Friday, April 26th. Keep reading to learn more about my week and follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to see more updates as they happen.

Demanding the Full Release of the Mueller Report

On Thursday, the much anticipated but heavily redacted report of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation was finally released by President Trump's handpicked Attorney General William Barr. In anticipation of its release, I talked to MSNBC's Alex Witt and Chris Matthews ; CNN's ErinBurnett twice; and to the BBC World Service in Britain. After the report was released, I was interviewed by Politico, Reuters, The Washington Post, Don Lemon of CNN and C-SPAN's "Washington Journal," and held a press availability for local media at my district office in Memphis. I made it clear in these interviews that Congress is entitled to see the unredacted report and the underlying evidence. While I believe President Trump has committed impeachable offenses, I don't believe Speaker Nancy Pelosi believes it is wise to pursue that course because the Senate would never find him guilty. But there should be some consequences for this behavior and I have suggested the possibility of a resolution of censure after Barr and Mueller appear before the House Judiciary Committee next month.

Asking for Answers on Reports Trump Offered a Pardon to Acting DHS Secretary

On Tuesday, as Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, I joined House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler and Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren in requesting information about reports that President Trump told Customs and Border Protection Commissioner and Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan that he would grant him a pardon if McAleenan goes to jail for illegally instructing border agents to block asylum seekers from entering the United States. Our letter makes clear that, if this allegation is true, it is a grave breach of the President's duty to make sure that our laws are faithfully executed. See the letter to McAleenan here.

A lot of people in the days ahead will be eating dyed hard-boiled eggs and deviled eggs, or cooking with eggs, and it's important to avoid bacterial contamination such as salmonella. See the Food and Drug Administration's advice on the safe handling of raw and cooked eggs here.

"People have got to know whether or not their President is a crook. Well, I'm not a crook. I've earned everything I've got." -- President Richard M. Nixon in a question and answer session with 400 Associated Press managing editors, Orlando, Florida, November 17, 1973.

As always, I remain

Most Sincerely,
